Meet the Host

LCDR Bernadine L. John, R.N., MsP, CDCES is a dedicated healthcare leader and diabetes specialist with a career spanning over 30 years in nursing, public health, and chronic disease prevention. Her extensive experience includes clinical practice, patient education, grant management, and program development, with a particular focus on diabetes prevention and management within Native communities.

Currently serving as the Navajo Area Diabetes Nurse Consultant and IHS

Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) Project Director, LCDR John provides technical guidance, training, and mentorship to healthcare providers and tribal health organizations. She is instrumental in ensuring the effective implementation of SDPI funding, helping facilities develop culturally responsive diabetes prevention programs that address the needs of Indigenous populations.

Her background includes work in OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Primary Care, and Emergency Medicine, where she provided direct patient care before transitioning into diabetes education. For the past 17 years, she has specialized as a Diabetes Educator, helping communities navigate the complexities of diabetes care through education, program implementation, and policy development.

Beyond her clinical expertise, LCDR John has been a strong advocate for public health initiatives that promote chronic disease prevention, improved healthcare access, and workforce development. She has played a key role in enhancing federal grant programs, ensuring that tribal healthcare organizations receive the support and resources needed to provide high-quality, evidence-based care. In addition, as Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), she continues to uphold the mission of improving the health and well-being of underserved populations.

Affectionately known as “Bernie” to those who work closely with her, she is recognized not only for her depth of knowledge and leadership but also for her warmth, mentorship, and dedication to uplifting others in the field of public health.

Through her expertise, leadership, and passion for healthcare, LCDR John remains committed to empowering healthcare teams, strengthening community-based interventions, and fostering sustainable improvements in diabetes care.
